The workshop

Winter Venice is photography's most complete found set — water doubling every façade, fog editing the skyline — and film is the honest way to work it: a meter, a roll, and decisions that stay made. Mara Voss runs the week from a working darkroom in Cannaregio, where each day's rolls are souped by night and contact-printed by morning.

The city is worked at its empty hours: first vaporetti, acqua alta's mirrors if the tide obliges, the lagoon's outer islands where boatyards still caulk hulls. Medium-format loaners circulate; the fee includes ten rolls and every chemical.

Hamburg · Weather · darkroom printing

Mara's subject is weather — the sea in winter, mountains in cloud. She prints everything by hand and asks her students to distrust any image that looks finished on the first pass.

Itinerary
01Day 1 — Loading inCameras issued or inspected, metering by eye calibrated against the lagoon's tricky silver light. First walk: Fondamente Nove at dusk. First rolls souped after dinner.
02Days 2–3 — The empty hoursFirst-vaporetto mornings: Cannaregio's working canals, the Squero's gondola yard, San Giorgio's tower before the queue exists. Afternoon darkroom rotations; contact sheets read nightly.
03Day 4 — The lagoonBy working boat to Pellestrina and the outer edges — fishing-village Venice, nets and painted houses, the horizon as a discipline. Fog, historically, has cooperated.
04Days 5–6 — Printing daysEach photographer prints three frames from the week under Mara's enlarger tutelage — dodging, burning, and the restraint conversation. Closing evening: prints pinned, argued, kept.

Participants, verbatim

Printing my own fog photograph of the cemetery island while the actual fog sat outside the darkroom window — I don't have another week like it in forty years of holidays.

I came never having loaded a roll. I left with three prints I made myself and a meter in my head that hasn't switched off since.

Questions, answered

What if there's no fog or flood?

January Venice without either is still winter Venice — empty, silver, and doubled in its own canals. The tide tables get consulted daily and the itinerary bends toward whatever the lagoon offers.

Complete beginner to film — really all levels?

Really. Day one calibrates everyone; the one-roll-at-a-time pace means nobody drowns. The darkroom rotations pair novices with the experienced deliberately.
