The workshop

This is the workshop for the plateau: technique fluent, portfolio full, and something unlocatable missing. In a rented Marais studio, six photographers and two instructors spend five days on judgement — editing, sequencing, consistency of voice, and the honest confrontation between what you make and what you claim to be making.

Paris is the assignment ground; its photographic tradition is the measuring stick, used unfairly and productively. Expect to photograph less than you have all year and think more than is comfortable. Admission is by portfolio: fifteen images and a paragraph on where you're stuck.

Kochi · Interiors · sequencing

Devika photographs rooms during monsoon and edits them like short stories. Her teaching is about order: which image speaks first, and which is allowed to stay quiet.

Itinerary
01Day 1 — The claimPortfolio surgery, all day: fifteen prints per photographer on the wall, described by the group before the maker speaks. The remove-your-ten-best exercise. What's left is your voice; the week works on it.
02Day 2 — The habit-breakAssignments engineered against each photographer's comforts: the colourist works grey, the wide-angle intimate goes long, the street sniper asks permission. Paris absorbs the discomfort. Evening: files argued.
03Day 3 — The archive descentInto the full drives: the pictures you never rated, read by other eyes. Most participants find a portfolio image they'd dismissed; several have found a project.
04Day 4 — Sequence & consistencyBuilding the new edit: voice-consistent sequences from the week's discoveries and the archive's exhumations. The boring-frame doctrine: bodies of work are built on connective tissue.
05Day 5 — The defence & the planFinal portfolios pinned and defended; the year's working plan written and signed by its author; the follow-up structure set (one-month group call, one further edit read within the year).

Participants, verbatim

Day one dismantled me; day three handed me a project I'd shot four years ago and never seen. I've been working on it since with more direction than I've had in a decade.

Johanna E., Helsinki, Finland

Six strangers knew what my work was about before I did. Worth every uncomfortable minute, and the one-month call kept it from evaporating on the flight home.

Questions, answered

How does admission work?

Fifteen images and a stuck-paragraph, reviewed within two weeks. We admit for readiness, not accomplishment — the portfolio can be modest if the appetite is real. Declined applicants get a genuine sentence or two about why, which several have called useful in itself.

Why is the group so small?

Because the room is the method: six portfolios can be known deeply in five days, eight can't. The two-instructor ratio exists for the same reason.

5 seats remaining.

Departures are deliberately small and tend to fill from the newsletter. Booking places no charge — we confirm your seat personally, then arrange payment.
