The workshop

Cape winter delivers the Atlantic's most photogenic violence: storm swells, kelp-line barrels, and surfers who treat both as an invitation. This workshop embeds in that season — headland telephoto sessions at dawn, harbour-mouth panning work, and two water days behind loaner surf housings for the qualified swimmers.

Amara Okafor teaches the sports photographer's real syllabus: position before reflex, backgrounds before subjects, and the fast edit under deadline — the one-hour file-and-caption drill that separates working shooters from spectators with good gear.

Itinerary
01Day 1 — Reading the sportSurf literacy for photographers: swell charts, lineups, and where the ride will peak before it exists. Afternoon: first headland session, backgrounds-first assignment.
02Days 2–3 — The long-lens daysDawn sessions at the winter reefs, panning drills at the harbour mouth, and the nightly edit. One afternoon: the one-hour file drill, run twice until it stops hurting.
03Days 4–5 — Water daysHoused sessions in the shorebreak and channel for qualified swimmers (pool assessment day one); headland alternative program runs parallel. Positioning, duck-diving with housings, and the fisheye conversation.
04Day 6 — The story, filedFinal dawn session shot as an assignment: five frames, captioned and transmitted by noon. Debrief lunch; portfolios reviewed against day one's files.

How qualified do I need to be for water days?

Confident open-water swimming, assessed honestly in a pool on day one. The headland program runs parallel and produces equal portfolios — the water days are an option, not the point.

Why July?

Southern winter is Cape surf's big season: groundswells, offshore mornings, and dramatic light between fronts. It's also whale-arrival season — the headland sessions have been photobombed accordingly.
